About us
Wines of the World – a brief history to date: Anthony Jones showed an interest in wine from a very early age when, age 8, he stole his dad’s home winemaking kit and secretly made a batch of wine from apples and elderberries. He hid the fruits of his labour in a Corona Lemonade bottle at the back of the pantry but his illicit stash was discovered by his mother and poured down the sink before he even got to taste it! Despite this early setback, he later rediscovered his passion for wine and joined the wine trade working first for Majestic and then Oddbins. In early 2005 Anthony joined forces with ‘high flyer’ Jason Bellis (well, he is a former pilot!) and launched www.winesoftheworld.co.uk on the internet. In August 2005, they opened their first retail outlet in Earlsfield, near Wimbledon.  Alex Roberts and Wayne Blomfield are running our store in Clapham Old Town. Alex has a long history in wine, first running wine bars, before joining Oddbins and managing several South London stores. Wayne’s passion for wine started in his ‘previous life’ over a leisurely City lunch (or two!) and continued with a five year stint as Fine Wine Manager, also at Oddbins. CAREERS AT WINES OF THE WORLD Trainee Managers Required Wines of the World is a successful Independent Wine Merchant buying wines from around the world for its shops in Earlsfield and Clapham. We are a young ambitious company and we need quality people to to take us through to the next exciting stage of our development. You'll start out as a Trainee Manager . Thanks to practical hands-on experience, coaching from members of our team and study for a formal qualification from The Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) you will progress quickly with the aim being that you run a Wines of the World store within 2 years. The ideal candidate will have: • Experience in a quality retail/Service environment. • An enthusiastic interest in wine • The highest standards of customer service • Excellent organisational skills • Numeracy skills and an ability to use initiative • Visual merchandising flare This is a full-time position with a requirement for some flexibility including weekend work.
