Wines of the World’s Introductory Wine Course
Who is this course aimed at?
Our beginner’s course is aimed at the enthusiastic beginner and no previous wine knowledge is required.
Our goal
This course will give you an excellent introduction to the world of wine. We aim to give you a better understanding and knowledge to experiment and explore with new styles and grape varieties. Knowing which wines to order and which to avoid on restaurant wine lists should also give you more confidence when entertaining clients or friends.
Course Content
We cover all the main grape varieties and styles from the Old and the New World. All wines are tasted "blind", so that you learn to make your judgement based on the taste of the wine in the glass and not on what it says on the label. We teach you how to evaluate and assess quality. Ageing potential; wine and food matching; wine production; storage conditions; wine faults.
The evenings take place in our store on Garratt Lane. We clear the shopfloor put out a large table and a few chairs pull the curtains and get stuck in. Our courses aren’t stuffy and formal they are about enjoying wine and learning about it. Average Group size is 11-12 people.
Week 1 Introduction to wine tasting
Week 2 Chardonnay from around the World
Week 3 Other White grape varieties
Week 4 Bordeaux styles around the world (Cab/Merlot wines)
Week 5 Other red grapes
Week 6 Sparkling Wine & Champagne
8-10 wines are tasted per session
Time
8 – 9.30pm (six consecutive weeks). There is half an hour at the end of each session to ask questions, re-taste wines and generally discuss all things vinous.
